He whose heart is not open to receive the bright beams of light from
the Sun of Righteousness, will meet with terrible loss; for the light that
is in him will become darkness, because of the rejection of additional light,
and he will walk in darkness, and lead others out of the path of peace and
joy and righteousness in the Holy Ghost. He who is thus blinded will cease
to grow in grace. The Lord Jesus is waiting to give the light of life to
those who are in darkness, in order that they may show forth the praises of
Him that hath called them out of darkness into His marvelous light. If the
rejectors of the Lord Jesus Christ could have seen what would be the result
of turning away from the world's Redeemer, of cherishing their own ideas and
exalting themselves in their own wisdom, what a picture would they have
beheld!

Those who minister in word and doctrine, should be pure in heart,
consecrated, soul, body, and spirit, to the work of Christ. If they are not
in this condition, they will not receive the light as Christ reveals it; they
will not conform their lives to the standard which God has given, and
additional light will not be granted them, because they have not made a right
use of that already given. When light is shed upon the mind, and the soul for
a time is subdued under its influence, and then the truth is not incorporated
into the life-practice, it will lose its force, and the man who is thus
privileged will be left in a worse condition than before the light was
granted him. He is represented as a slothful servant, as one who did not
think the truth of heaven essential to salvation, given to be lived out and
revealed to others with whom he should come in contact.

closing scenes of this earth's history. Another angel was to come from
heaven with a message, and the whole earth was to be lightened with his
glory. It would be impossible for us to state just how this additional
light would come. It might come in a very unexpected manner, in a way that
would not agree with the ideas that many have conceived. It is not at all
unlikely, or contrary to the ways and works of God, to send light to His
people in unexpected ways. Would it be right that every avenue should be
closed in our school so that the students could not have the benefit of this
light? The resolution was not called for .--Letter 22, 1889.

If the saints of the Old Testament were to be
bright and shining lights to the world, we are
bound to shine brighter than they, because we have
all the light which they had flashing upon our
pathway from the prophetic past and the additional
light which has come to us in the life of Christ.
Fuller prophecies reveal the true Jehovah to those
upon whom the ends of the world are come. God
has a special light in this age of the world, a
special message to give in the proclamation of the
third angel's message--the commandments of God
and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Were our fathers engaged in an evil work? We are not to do wickedly
because they did. Were they devoted to a good work? We can imitate them only
by performing our duty as faithfully as they performed theirs; by heeding the
light granted to us as faithfully as they heeded that which shone upon them;
in short, by doing as they would have done had they lived in our day, and
enjoyed our privileges and opportunities. Our responsibility is greater than
was that of our ancestors. We are accountable for the light which they
received, and which was handed, down as an inheritance for us, and we are
also accountable for the additional light which is now shining upon us from
the sure word of prophecy. The truth that has convinced the understanding or
convicted the soul, by whatever means it may have been given, will judge us
at the last great day. No one will be condemned because he did not believe
that which was never presented to his understanding or urged upon his
conscience. Said Christ of the unbelieving Jews: "If I had not come, and
spoken unto them, they had not had sin; but now they have no cloak for their
sin."

God's people must go on from light to a greater light, or they will
become, as did the Pharisees, unwilling to receive additional light. They
will find themselves in the condition represented by withered, dried-up
bottles. In their religious faith they will be unmovable, inflexible, like
the withered fig tree dried up by the roots. Those whom Jesus chose for his
work were people to whom the world gave little attention; the fishermen, the
despised publicans and Samaritans, had no connection with the schools of the
scribes and Pharisees; but Christ saw in them the requisite qualifications
for the work of God. The Pharisees looked upon his association with publicans
and sinners as a matter that merited their condemnation; for it was in marked
contrast to their habits, customs, and traditions. But Christ taught his
disciples lessons concerning the broad character of his kingdom, which was to
be perpetuated through eternal ages.

When light comes to the soul through God's appointed agencies, and it is
not received and acted upon, there is manifest a contempt of God, and
stubborn resistance increases as additional light comes to convince of error,
and manifest truth. The case of Pharaoh stands forth in Bible history to warn
men off the ground that he took. He set himself in stubborn resistance
against the messages and warnings God sent. Every ray of light that comes
from heaven to men, when resisted by the ungodly, increases their power of
resistance, and finally sets the heart in rebellion against God. He who sows
rebellion reaps rebellion.

be "lightened with the glory." The Spirit of the Lord will so graciously and
universally bless consecrated human instrumentalities, that men, women, and
children will open their lips in praise and testimony, filling the earth with
the knowledge of God, and with his unsurpassed glory, as the waters cover the
sea.

<SB There followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is
fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the
wine of the wrath of her fornication. Rev. 14:8. <EB
The second angel's message of Revelation 14 was first
preached in the summer of 1844, and it then had a more direct
application to the churches of the United States, where the
warning of the judgment had been most widely proclaimed
and most generally rejected, and where the declension in the
churches had been most rapid. But the message of the second
angel did not reach its complete fulfillment in 1844. The
churches then experienced a moral fall, in consequence of their
refusal of the light of the advent message; but that fall was not
complete. As they have continued to reject the special truths for
this time they have fallen lower and lower. Not yet, however, can
it be said that "Babylon is fallen,... because she made <SI all nations <EI
drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." She has not
yet made all nations do this.
